Quick background: who you are, where are you from, how long have you been a Pentaholic, etc!
I am Sabrina Molina (SabrinaPTXtacy) – I am 47 yo married mother of an 11yo boy. I am a licensed mental health counselor and have been helping people for 20ish years. I live in Jacksonville Florida (PTX FAN autographed license plate). I discovered PTX in 2013 at around the same time that I received a diagnosis of Young onset Parkinson’s Disease. I became a Pentaholic approximately 4 1/2 seconds into the first video I ever watched (Carol of the Bells) and like many of you I have not crawled out of the PTX hole since.
What made you want to go to PentaCon 2k16?
I decided kind of last minute to go to Pentacon. I usually change my mind 67 times or so before making a decision – especially those that will surely be ‘judged’ by my family. I had already seen PTX twice in April 2016 and when I mentioned Pentacon, my family said…’you want to go to TEXAS? ALONE? To spend the weekend with STRANGERS? And PTX won’t even BE there?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
So, after a doctor said ‘screw them, its your life, do what you want while you can….no regrets’ ….I did just that and about 1 month before Pentacon, I bought my ticket and arranged to join 3 online friends in a room share.
Did you know any of the other attendees before the Con?
Before Pentacon, I had actually only met SarahBeth Boss and Amber Bell (once) at the Orlando concert. SB flew from Connecticut to share a room with me after a verbal ‘no kill’ agreement was reached. I had communicated via social media with others but technically knew no one well.
What part(s) were you most looking forward to?
Honestly I had no expectations. I was one of the folks who were secretly hoping PTX would show up (unpopular opinion, I know) but am now so glad they didn’t because it would have changed the experience. I was simply looking forward to being able to talk about PTX without getting an eye roll or deep sigh in response.
Were there any parts of the weekend that surprised you or exceded your expectations?
ALL OF IT! The Pentaparent panel was amazing. Mario and Naomi were hilarious. Watching them do Karaoke was surreal. The best part was probably walking into a room and someone ELSE was playing PTX and everyone was singing and dancing along. Making a Superfruit quote and EVERYONE getting it. It felt like home. No judgement….just happiness.
Watching the documentary with 200 other people who recited the dialogue and sang along – WITH the parents.
What would you tell someone who is on the fence about attending PentaCon 2k18?
It was one of the top 10 times of my life. I felt safe and happy. Internet friends are REAL! GO GO GO!
Because of the experience I started a Facebook fan group for ‘older fans’ called Pentaholics for Grown ups, which has turned into more of a family than a fan group. I am ‘friends’ with the Grassis and the Hoyings.
Pentatonix and Pentacon are responsible for me finding my people and I couldn’t be happier.
